Balloons come in many different shapes and sizes, including a traditional balloon, racer, hybrid, and special shape. For this blog and competition I will explain the difference between 2: the traditional and the racer.
Also known as a round balloon, the traditional shape balloon is what most often comes to peoples heads when they hear the words "Hot Air Balloon". It is characterized by a round, almost circular shape.
These balloons can be very large and are produced for a variety of applications.
Note from this balloon's owner: Typical round balloons don't have such a unique appearing texture (or smell) to the fabric.
A common analogy used for this comparison is that a racer is a Corvette to the round balloon's SUV. Both achieve the same function, but in very different ways and at different speeds.
The racer is characterized by a narrower equator and taller frame (when compared to a round balloon of the same size). This gives it a more teardrop like shape, which improves aerodynamics. Improved aerodynamics means that the balloon can ascend and descend much faster than a round balloon. This allows the pilot to change wind layers (and thus direction) much faster, but also makes the balloon much more responsive to burning or venting. This responsiveness can mean that it must be managed more on the pilot's end.
Because of the speed, these balloons are often seen in competition. Most balloons present in Krosno will be racers.
