15.18 MAXIMUM DISTANCE DOUBLE DROP (XDD)
15.18.1 Competitors will attempt to achieve two marks or valid track points far apart in the scoring area(s).
15.18.2 Task data:

15.18.3 The result is the distance between the marks or farthest valid track points. Greatest result is best.
The Maximum Distance Double Drop is the opposite of the MDD. This one requires two points placed by the pilot. They are told parameters around those points, and must maximize the distance between the two points while satisfying the parameters.
In this task, the flight path across the scoring area is critical. Any deviation from optimal can be increasingly costly, because the time between drops amplifies miscalculations.
An example scoring area is shown below. This is taken from 44. Austrian National and 31. Styrian Hot Air Balloon Championship 2026. The blue areas were the valid scoring regions, so the optimal result would be to place one marker in the top left corner of the P and the other in the bottom right corner of the H.

This tells the pilots what areas they are allowed to place marks in. In physical tasks, it is typically a diagram. In virtual tasks, it is typically a list of coordinates or a diagram.
