15.7 WATERSHIP DOWN (WSD)
15.7.1 Competitors will fly to the launch point of a hare balloon, follow the hare and attempt to achieve a mark close to a target displayed by the hare no more than two meters upwind of the basket after landing.
15.7.2 Task data:
a. description of the hare balloon
b. location of the launch point of the hare balloon
c. set take-off time of the hare balloon
d. intended flight duration of the hare balloon
15.7.3 The result is the distance from the mark to the target. Smallest result is best.
15.7.4 If the hare balloon does not take off within 5 minutes after the set time then this task is considered cancelled.
15.7.5 Variation from the flight duration of the hare shall not be ground for complaint.
15.7.6 The hare may deflate after landing and may be removed from the field.
15.7.7 The hare may display a banner hanging below his basket. No competitor shall display any banner hanging below the basket during this task.
This task is very similar to the Hare and Hounds. The primary difference is that the hare balloon launches from a different field than the competitors. This involves more coordination, and means that the parameters and limitations are very important in ensuring fair competition.
The hare balloon's landing site is still the location of the target for scoring purposes. The hare balloon cannot score on this task.
Task data:
description of the hare balloon
This tells the pilots how to identify the hare balloon. Often, it is distributed as a photo either on the task sheet or on paper during briefing. Ballooning is also a small enough sport that pilots often know balloons by their pilot's name.
location of the launch point of the hare balloon
This gives competitors a point of reference for the flight of the hare balloon. It can be paired with wind information to get a rough idea of the valid positions of the landing point.
set take-off time of the hare balloon
This tells the pilots when the hare balloon will begin flying. This is critical in flight planning and task timing, especially when the WSD is not the first task in the string.
intended flight duration of the hare balloon
This gives pilots an idea of how long the flight is going to be, but also gives the hare some basis for setting the target. This prevents the hare from flying for an absurd amount of time, although the flight duration is not grounds for an official complaint.
