15.9 CALCULATED RATE OF APPROACH TASK (CRT)
15.9.1 Competitors will attempt to achieve a mark within a valid scoring area close to a set goal. The scoring area(s) will have unique times of validity.
15.9.2 Task data:
a. position of goal/target.
b. description of scoring area(s) and their validity times
15.9.3 The result is the distance from the mark to the target, if displayed, or goal. Smallest result is best.
15.9.4 A competitor who does not achieve a mark inside a scoring area during its time of validity, will not achieve a result.
The Calculated Rate of Approach Task is the first time-based task. It involves variations in the time which a pilot may score. For example, if there are 2 targets (like a HWZ), one could be open from 8:00 to 8:30 and another from 8:30 to 9:00. Any results outside of the target's prescribed open time will be invalid.
A common way to set this task up is by setting different zones in the same field. For example, 4 quadrants where the active quadrant rotates. A common modification is to make any fabric involved (such as the X or the boundaries) always valid scoring areas. This introduces an element of greed to the mix, where pilots may achieve a better result for being willing to risk their result.
Task data:
position of goal/target.
This tells the competitors the location of the target and scoring area.
description of scoring area(s) and their validity times
This tells competitors what areas are valid during what times. Typically it is defined down to seconds.
