15.1 PILOT DECLARED GOAL (PDG)
15.1.1 Competitors will attempt to achieve a mark close to a goal selected and declared by him before take-off.
15.1.2 Task data:
a. method of declaration
b. number of goals permitted
c. goals available for declarations
d. minimum and maximum distances of goal(s) from CLP or ILP as per TDS
e. minimum and maximum distances of goal(s) from any goal set by the director
15.1.3 The result is the distance from the mark to the nearest valid declared goal. Smallest result is best.
The pilot declared goal is the first listed task in the rulebook. It involves the pilot selecting their own coordinate using a 4/4 coordinate (see the Coordinates section for an explanation on what this means). This coordinate can be any point on the competition map, unless the director intentionally places a requirement on it. The coordinate must be declared prior to launching the balloon.
Once this declaration is made and the goal is selected, the pilot must then fly to that point and make a scoring mark (electronic or physical depending on the task). The closer they are to the point, the better.
The point is often selected based on the other tasks in the flight, and what the pilot feels is attainable based on the winds for that morning.
Task data:
method of declaration
Tells the pilot how to officially declare their point. Typically, this is the Balloon Live App in modern ballooning.
number of goals permitted
The number of points that the pilot can select for that task. For example, if there is 2 goals permitted then the pilot can choose two points as valid locations, then must fly as close as possible to one of them.
goals available for declarations
Define what coordinates the pilot may select, this is where any parameters around valid coordinate sets would go
minimum and maximum distances of goal(s) from CLP or ILP as per TDS
Denotes how far the selected point has to be from the launch point
minimum and maximum distances of goal(s) from any goal set by the director
denotes the allowable distance from other tasks
