15.17 MAXIMUM DISTANCE (XDI)
15.17.1 Competitors will attempt to achieve a mark or valid track point far away from the reference point within a set scoring area(s).
15.17.2 Task data:
a. description of scoring area(s)
b. reference point
15.17.3 The result is the distance from the mark or valid track point to the reference point. Greatest result is best.
The XDI is the opposite of the Shortest Flight. The pilots are given a specified airspace and a reference point. They are then told to make a scoring mark as far away from the reference point as possible while still remaining within the airspace.
This task is typically virtual because of the expansive nature of the task. Often, the shapes will be rectangles or triangles, because the corners present require the pilots to fly to a more and more precise location, incentivizing more intentional flying. That said, the shape could be anything.
Because this is another virtual task, enjoy another balloon picture!
Task data:
description of scoring area(s)
This tells the pilots what region they may make a scoring mark in. It is typically a set of gridlines or coordinates defining a shape.
reference point
This tells the pilots where their scoring mark will be measured to in order to determine their result.
