In ballooning, scoring involves a marker. This marker is the point to which a pilot is scored based on the task. There are two types of marks: physical and electronic.
A physical mark is shown in the picture to the left. It is a weight bean bag with a long tail. The tail allows the pilot to spin or "wind" it in order to throw further. All markers are regulated in weight and tail length to ensure an even playing field. One modification to a task that can be made is called a Gravity Marker Drop, which requires the pilot to hang the marker out of the basket and drop it straight down. This means they are not allowed to throw it.
An electronic mark is based on a GPS, and for this event involves either tracking the pilots position or placing a mark on the map to denote the pilot's official result.
