This section will outline how the scoring officer takes a distance result and turns it into a point total. Before the actual math is done 2 things must happen: application of result penalties and sorting the competitors into 3 groups.
The application of result penalties is a relatively simple process. There are certain penalties which add or subtract to/from the measured result of the competitor rather than subtracting points (for example, turning a 0m result into a 50m result). This must be done first.
The competitors can then be sorted into the below groups.
All information in this section has been taken from Section 14 of the FAI AXMERs (Rulebook).
Group A consists of competitors with measured results or who lost their marker.
Group B is competitors who do not achieve a result, digital or otherwise.
Group C is those pilots without a valid launch or who are disqualified.
The competitor with the best result on that task receives 1000 points before penalties.
The pool is then sorted into 3 new groups:
This is the top half of results.
This is the inferior half of results.
These are competitors who do not have a result.
SM = rounded points score of the median ranked competitor calculated under formula 2.
RM = result achieved by median ranked competitor
W = the winning result of the task
R = competitors result
P = number of competitors ranked in the flight
L = competitors ranking position
P = number of competitors ranked in the flight
A = number of competitors in group A
If no competitor achieves a result, then all competitors receive 500 points before penalties.
If less than half of the competitors achieve a result:
RM = lowest ranking result in group A
SM = rounded score of the lowest ranking competitor in group A, calculated under Formula 2
M = lowest ranking competitor in group A
In order for a task to count, half of all competitors must fly in the flight.
